Weber State University: The Place to Learn

This morning I was able to view several videos about Weber State University. I’ve worked for the university for over 22 years and love being a valued contributor at Weber State. With one of the hardest years now behind us (COVID-19 didn’t make it easy for many), the first video reflected back on all the University accomplished during the past year ~ and it was quite a lot!

With this year being the 132nd year since the university was founded, we’ve certainly accomplished much and have a terrific University President leading the way.

Weber State University President: Brad Mortensen

His leadership and efforts since his tenure began have and continue to be a positive experience for us all.

The second video I watched was a college campus tour conducted by Jeshua Van Sickle. A nicely done video with information about our University and all we offer to students seeking out top degree options. Weber State has a number of accredited programs and degrees available to choose from, a beautiful campus located in Ogden, UT, and top professors who teach with the utmost professionalism.

Weber State prides itself on being one that offers small class sizes to help students get more individualized support from faculty members. I can attest to the truthfulness of this. As a teacher at the University since 2000, I recognize how I was able to help students learn the information they needed to retain to not only pass the class, but also to help them apply what they’d learned to their real world experiences outside of the classroom. Teaching has not been my primary role at Weber State, but it is primary to the University’s mission.

The third video I watched was a short video showing the easy process to get tested on campus for COVID-19. The video was hosted by our current Weber State University Student Body President, Ben Ferney. Seems like it’s quite painless to do this quick and easy test. Results come back quickly, sent to an email within 30 minutes.

I’m proud to be a graduate of Weber State and to work at this highly recognized and leading higher education institution.

Go Wildcats!

Poem: Hungry Eyes

Hungry Eyes
by Stephanie Quinn

Stepping out of my Seattle apartment
I feel a nice cool breeze caress my legs
I lock the door behind me and dread paying the rent
I stop at my favorite cafe to pay for an order of scrambled eggs
My heels click as I step off of the pavement
Why are all of their hungry eyes on me
I thought I looked the same as every other day
Same lip gloss and mascara and hair that flows free
The man with spiked hair licks his lips in a way
That is obvious what he wants to see
He whispers something to his friend with a gesture
And a cheeky grin on his face
The friend glances at me with humor
I take out my makeup bag and find my compact case
What are they seeing that is so amusing
I glance over my shoulder to find an empty chair
All I know is that men are so confusing
Is my beauty the reason why they stare
Two can play this game
I’ve been called quite a tease
I push my chest out and my body calls his name
I didn’t know my seduction would capture him with such ease
Spiked hair man casually struts over to my table
Once again he flashes his sideways smile
He asks if I’m feeling stable
I reply yes after a short while
His next question took a minute to sink in
He asks if I rushed this morning
I tell him yes confused yet again
He nods his head towards my toes and back up with warning
I look down and my face flushes red
My confusion is suddenly gone
He smiles at me and nods his head
I forgot to put my pants on.

Another poem from the Weber State University Metaphor Fall 2014 published work. When I first read this, I laughed for about ten minutes. I thought that the world at large would also get a kick out of it. Great writing can come from some of our most embarrassing moments. 🙂

Poem: The hair I hid behind

The hair I hid behind
by Jennifer Sanda

Every day I stood and let my mother
braid my hair, French or fishtail,
even a twist we invented while bored,
giving me a look, a signature,
unimaginatively names “the J braid.”

Every day I looked in the mirror
at my round face, with its apple cheeks
“like a cherub’s,” according to mom,
and I’d wonder how different I’d be
if I lost the fall of brown-black that hung
down my back past my butt.

Every day until I was fourteen —
the year my family fell apart,
the year I found my voice,
the year I knew about love
and loss — the weight bent my shoulders,
my head, gave me the unassuming
presence I thought I should be.

I picked up a copy of the 2014 Metaphor in December and read through the poetry and discovered this gem. I found several I really like, but this one struck a cord with me. Not because of the braids or the long hair, but with the changes one makes when they discover love – especially young love.

July in Utah

With Independence Day on July 4th and Pioneer Day on July 24th Utahns have several opportunities to set off fireworks in July. Another Ogden favorite is the  Lindquist Family Pops Concert & Fireworks held on the Weber State University campus. Attended by 1000’s of people each year, the lawns are colored with patchwork quilts as families mark their spots and then enjoy the festivities and fireworks show.

July is also my birth month. Something about summer fun – and fireworks – and my birthday…that keeps me happy all during July!

Happy Birthday America…and Happy Birthday to me!
